Spirituality in the Workplace

You are a divine creation. Your spiritual growth continues to change your life in good ways, affecting how you think about your choices and actions. And you surround yourself with relationships and resources that help you grow.

So what happens when you go to work? How do you develop and maintain workplace spirituality?

Try these ideas to keep in touch with your spirituality—on the job and in your workplace relationships:

Keep affirming thoughts close at hand.

Add inspiration to the beginning of your day, your coffee break, or your lunch hour with Daily Word messages. Tuck a copy of the magazine into a drawer for easy accessibility, read the word for the day at dailyword.com, or sign-up for free e-delivery of the message to your e-mail address every day. The affirming thoughts you’ll find in the Daily Word message can help you return to your spiritual center.

Create a sacred space.

Think of a photograph, an object from nature, or a special memento or artifact that carries spiritual significance for you. Then create a space for your symbol or symbols on your desktop, in a drawer, or behind a cabinet door. If you’re discrete (you’ll want to be careful not to offend your coworkers or violate your company’s policies about workspace décor), you can make a tiny personal altar that reminds you of your spiritual journey.

Breathe your way to awareness.

Refocus your attention on your heart and soul. Take a deep breath, maybe two. Then close your eyes and become aware again of your spiritual nature. Pause, breathe, and you’ll see your spirituality is always with you.

Recognize the people around you.

See others as you see yourself - filled with spiritual possibilities, centered in God. Picture the people you work with discovering their spiritual potential in their own ways. Try this prayer:

God, I pause now to acknowledge You as the one power, one presence in my life. I let go of the busyness of my day and bring my attention to the people around me now. I am willing to listen with an open mind and an open heart, to hear what is really being said, and to respond in peaceful, loving ways. I trust Your guidance, God, and I commit my thoughts, words, and actions to Your will and Your way. I thank You for being with me now and always.

You are a spiritual person. Stay open to your spirituality wherever you are, and a universe of possibilities will unfold for you.
